Here are a few of our past accomplishments:
Our Higher Education Project helped pass the College Cost Reduction and Access Act
into law, providing billions of dollars in new funding for Pell grants
and student loans, lowering student loan interest rates, and making
college more affordable for millions of students.
We wrote and campaigned for a bill that would have lowered the cost of college textbooks. Our efforts were highlighted in the Los Angeles Times.
The bill passed through the California state house but was vetoed by
the governor, so now we’re working to pass the bill through the U.S.
Congress. The bill just passed the House and now moves to the Senate.
We registered 2200 USC students to vote, including 1000 just in 2008.
Our efforts to get out the vote were highlighted by many media outlets,
including CBS Evening News and CurrentTV.
We convinced the Transportation Department to convert the Campus Cruiser fleet to hybrid cars and to use biodiesel to run the campus trams.
We teamed up with USG to create a sustainability task force
on campus, which worked to set up recycling in campus housing. We also
handed out 1000 energy efficient light bulbs to students.
Our What’s Your Plan? Campaign
met face-to-face with the presidential candidates over 100 times to ask
them about their plans to address global warming. Here at USC, we spoke
with Ron Paul when he visited campus.
MySpace and MTV used our video question about global warming in the nationally televised forum they held with Senator McCain.
We hosted a national student conference on poverty issues, which was attended by 500 students from around the country.
Our Hunger Cleanup raised $4000 which went to help the LA Community Action Network provide job training for the homeless.
