This weekend about 80 CALPIRG staff and student volunteers from across the state met at UCLA for a day of training, campaign planning, and a phone bank to turn out the youth vote on November 4th. Many thanks to Los Angeles City Councilmember Paul Koretz for being a guest speaker!

The California ban on single-use plastic bags is a huge step toward reducing litter, but it might not be as effective a change as its advocates assume. On Sept. 30, Gov. Jerry Brown became the first governor to sign a statewide ban on plastic bags in grocery and convenience stores. Many California cities already instituted the ban earlier this year, including Los Angeles. In his signing statement, Brown stated that he hopes to encourage other states across the nation to follow our example and reduce their litter as well.
Whether it’s your first semester or your last, you have probably been approached at least once by the on-campus environmental group CalPIRG. Perhaps you’ve accumulated a ton of their flyers and emails by now — maybe even texts. Perchance you’ve heard about their campaign, called Berkeley Go Solar! If you don’t know too much about it yet, now is your chance to learn.
Fewer students than usual could be found Monday on Sproul Plaza due to the weather, but some braved the rain for a final push to register students to vote, with hours remaining before the deadline. Many student groups have launched initiatives to increase student voter registration in time for the upcoming midterm elections Nov. 4. Students from the campus voters coalition, which includes representatives from the ASUC and CALPIRG, worked on the New Voters Project.
