Ever walk down a street on Christmas and see each house with their Christmas lights on? Ever wonder how much energy that must be wasting? Energy Service Corps, a partnered program of CALPIRG and AmeriCorps, is working to educate the next generation about energy conservation. Students from the Energy Service Corps program at UCSC educated a class of 4th graders at Westlake Elementary on the importance of conserving energy. One of the most basic tips for these students was to turn off the lights! Turning off the lights when not in a room of the house is a great, easy way to save energy and to save money on your electricity bill. Beyond the basics, Energy Service Corps students taught these 4th graders about renewable vs. non-renewable energy sources. These students will now grow up conscious of the benefits of wind, solar and even geothermal energy sources. Moreover, these students will go home and talk to their parents about what they learned in a special presentation that day. So, our Energy Service Corps students are not only reaching the next generation about energy issues, but they are reaching the current adult generation as well! Two birds with one stone, sweet!
