This winter we have a ton of exciting campaign work planned! We will
be working to get hundreds of signatures, photo petitions, and video petitions
into Senators Boxer and Feinstein's offices asking them to pass a national cap
on global warming pollution (something we have already done here in the
beautiful state of California).
We will also be urging our elected representatives to increase Pell Grant
funding by$40 billion (taking money that would go to subsidize bank lending
and giving it directly to students, which is far more effective). Our
hunger and homelessness interns and volunteers will be going to New Life in Santa Cruz to volunteer,
helping prepare food on a weekly basis. We will also be organizing a food
drive and planning our annual hunger cleanup service event for the entire
community! Students will also be organizing events around the Gubernatorial
race, making sure that our next Governor answers the question: "What is
your plan for higher education?" before she/he takes office. Our health
care campaign will be delivering a giant Get Well Soon card to Senator
Feinstein, asking her to speed our broken health care system to recovery by
passing health care reform. Our oceans campaign will be working to
protect our marine friends, like sea otters and dolphins, by working to pass a
plastic bag ban in Santa Cruz and prevent
drillingoff the coast of California.
In order for us to get all this stuff done, we need a lot of people to help
us out. If you are interested in getting involved doing an internship or volunteering, email Carolina Van
Horn, our campus organizer, carolina@calpirgstudents.org!
