Save the Cal Grants
Sign the petition below to tell Governor Schwarzenegger to protect funding for Cal Grants.
On Friday, Governor Schwarzenegger is releasing his budget proposal for the coming year and the Cal Grants, the state’s flagship student financial aid program, may be at risk.
Petition Text
Dear Governor Schwarzenegger,
Please protect the Cal Grants. As you rightly noted in your recent address to the state, college education has been a central part of the Californian success story. Higher education is also the key to the self betterment and progress, not to mention economic recovery, we hope to see continue in the near future. Because our future economic well-being is so dependent upon education, we can no longer afford to cut higher education. Thank you for these words of wisdom, and your commitment to protect higher education funding in your 2010 budget.
The Cal Grant program, as the state's flagship student financial aid program, has enabled thousands of Californians to access higher education, and to then give back to their communities as entrepreneurs, teachers, leaders and innovators. Just last year, some 300,000 Californians benefited from the grant. The Cal Grant Program has already been stripped bare: the size of the grants has increased only 10% in the last 20 years, has not kept pace with the cost of living, and there are more eligible students than grants available, leaving a lot of potential students with no way to pay for school. Please maintain current funding for Cal Grants. We must solve our budget problems without stripping our state of the tools it needs to get back on its feet.
Sincerely,

Don't break my heart... Save Cal Grants
The Cal Grants were created in the 1970s to help students pay for tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, transportation, and other college-related expenses. Approximately 30% of students at UCI have Cal Grants.
